When considering whether or not to include an accent chair in your space, it is important to keep in mind what purpose it is going to serve. An accent chair could serve the purpose of a decorative piece within the space in addition to its primary function as additional seating. Here are 4 things to consider when selecting an accent chair:
1. How it complements other furniture within the space.
It is important to ensure sure that the space being furnished has a cohesive look. This means selecting furniture types that flow together. However, it does not mean that the furniture has to match, but rather, when they are placed within the space, they pair well. An accent chair can be the contrasting or statement piece within the space.
2. Comfort Level
Most accent chairs will only sit one person and that is fine. Depending on the space that the accent chair will be placed in, understanding the function it will serve within that space is important. If the accent is will be in a room that is rarely occupied as a decorative piece, the comfortability of the chair is irrelevant. However, if the chair will be utilized in a commonly used space, it would make sense to ensure that the accent chair will be comfortable to sit on for an extended period of time.

3. The placement
Accent chairs when placed incorrectly could make the room feel awkward visually. When an accent chair is placed properly, it should complete the look of the room. Some factors that can determine the placement of the accent chairs are: The size of the accent chairs, The form of chairs, The layout of the space.
- Size: When the accent chair is too big within the room, it could make the space feel very cluttered and vice versa, if the accent chair is too small, there will always be a sense of something missing within the space. It is always helpful to visit the furniture stores to see their sample floor models and furniture layout designs.
- Form: While I love the idea of mixing different styles of furniture, this can be awkward if they are not balanced visually. To achieve visual balance, one could select accent chairs that have a similar color scheme or shape to other furniture within the space.
- Layout
An accent chair should not compete for space with other furniture. It also should not be placed where they are impeding traffic. One would often find accent chairs next to fireplaces, opposite a couch or in a corner next to the side of a bed. The accent chairs should be positioned so that they can have their moment without overshadowing the rest of the furniture.
4. Design
Accent chairs come in many styles like, Mid-century, modern, traditional or even sculptural. Ultimately, your style preference will most likely dictate the type of accent chair that you select.
